vintage-auto-glassAre you in the process of restoring a classic car or do you already have a classic auto? If so, you know that it can be a real challenge to find parts that are vintage themselves or that will fit your vehicle and maintain the classic look and lines you want to maintain. One of the biggest challenges when dealing with a classic vehicle is replacing window and windshield glass.

Even if you can find original vintage auto glass to replace any that are cracked or broken, that might not be the wisest strategy. Associated Glass can outfit your classic with new glass that’s better than vintage. There are three main concerns to consider when dealing with glass for a vintage vehicle:

  • Safety

  • Availability

  • Affordability

Safety concerns of original, vintage auto glass

Older original glass is not as safe as modern auto glass. For years, it shattered more easily and into shards that could seriously injury. As glass evolved, safety features like laminated glass which made it more difficult to break came into common usage as did tempered glass which allows glass that breaks to shatter into pieces that are not sharp and generally won’t slice and dice you.

Depending on how old your classic ride is, you may not want to go for vintage glass and instead opt for the safety and security that modern glass offers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) set some minimum standards that auto glass must meet including:

  • Auto glass must be strong enough to keep occupants in the vehicle during an accident

  • Windshields must be mounted to ensure retention strength during an accident

  • No part of a vehicle can penetrate the windshield more than .24 inches in a crash

Availability of original, vintage auto glass

If you are an absolute purist and insist on having original glass for your baby, you may be quickly frustrated. Your options to find true vintage glass include junk yards, auto restoration shops, a classic car club or take your chances on eBay. But the fact is, custom made auto glass will look as good, or better, and will be a much safer and reliable alternative than vintage glass. More importantly, you may spend hours and hours of time trying to find original glass for your vehicle but turn up nothing at all.

Affordability of original, vintage auto glass

Because vintage glass is technically an antique, you’ll pay top-dollar prices. The upside of opting for new custom glass over vintage is that it will not only be a better quality product but it will also be cheaper. The cost will depend entirely on the size and style of the windshield. We can replace flat laminated and tempered glass for your classic car, no matter the make or model. And once your replacement glass is installed, it will be the same as original glass for insurance purposes.
